The current talks about repealing the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy have created its share of a stir across the U.S. Military. I don’t know if you’ve been following it, or even heard of it, but it’s the mountain out of a molehill scenario over sexuality. I’ve been reading several articles and have answered several DoD surveys regarding the subject.

Having been exposed to homosexuals my entire life, the subject appeals to me as much as the food they serve me at the chowhall, as in not at all. The concept of same sex couples was never out of the ordinary for me. One of my uncles is gay. So is his boyfriend. I love them both, regardless of having not seen them for years. Did I always know they were “gay”? No. I didn’t know they were gay because I didn’t know the concept. Once I did, I put it together and it made sense. “Ooooooh, that’s why he’s… like that… riiiiight.”

Did it change the way I perceived them or their behavior? Not in the slightest. I have since grown up to befriend several gay people, I helped two of my friends realize they are gay (by non sexual means I assure you…), and generally maintain a slightly homosexual or effeminate demeanor for the sake of it is who I am. Yeah, I know, I’m kinda queer. I got it.

The concept that there is such a huge uproar right now about gays serving openly shouldn’t even be this much of an issue. It’s not only a waste of all the money we dump into the pockets of the douche bags we have to decide this stuff for us, it’s childish. I’m fairly confident that just because gays are allowed to serve openly doesn’t mean they will.

No. No I don’t foresee that happening, at least not across the board. Yes, there will be those guys n gals who do that. They are a minority. In my experience I didn’t know someone was gay until weeks or even months down the line, when they told me. The media has played up the flamboyant gays to a point where that’s all people think they are.

Another point of contention, from the Secretary of Defense, The Honorable Mr. Gates, himself, is the surveys that have been sent out to the actual active military personnel.

So… The military should have no say on points pertaining to the military. Fantastic. Personally, I’m insulted. My opinion on how this organization is operated is meaningless because I’m…? Stupid? Incompetent? Thank you, Mr. Gates, for undermining EVERY military member serving the United States. Next time you want a war, load out, hop in a humvee, and fight it yourself.

Most of the fear, because it can’t be based in any other logical realm of thinking, has to stem from our beloved religion, Christianity. Gays are evil. EVIL! And they must be treated as such! You claim to be a homosexual but are living a quiet normal life with your significant other? Blasphemy! I-What? What about spousal abuse? No, no. That’s all in Holy Scripture, somewhere, and that man is just carrying God’s word to his dear wife’s face. He is a holy man. You, sir, are an abomination.

That also brings up a point about our Chaplains. All of whom are Christian. All of them. Can we really trust them to administer proper care to a person who is in need if s/he is openly gay? I don’t think so. I wouldn’t trust anyone who is openly anti-gay to administer proper care, much less someone who has been taught such thoughts without ever having any first-hand experience.

In the end, I would think, someone’s sexuality would be put aside on the basis of their desire to serve their country. Isn’t that every American’s right? Why would you want to segregate someone who wants to give back? If the man fighting next to me is gay, good for him, perhaps he can be my little spoon. All I care about is whether this man can put rounds on target and save me should I need saving.
